About this programme

Reticulation failures are rarely caused by exotic problems. They come from fault levels that were never recalculated, protection grading that was inherited rather than designed, and earthing that was assumed rather than verified.

This intensive two-day workshop covers the complete reticulation lifecycle — planning and design, fault level calculations, and protection schemes for overhead lines, underground cables, transformers and busbars.

Delegates also work through earthing applications, overhead and underground reticulation construction, and power reticulation within buildings, with content aligned to current SANS and IEEE standards.

Day 1

Introduction, planning and protection philosophy (Modules 1 – 3)

  • Module 1 — Introduction to MV/LV reticulation: life cycle of an electrical network, reticulation requirements, load forecasting, power supply characteristics of the MV network, After Diversity Maximum Demand (ADMD) estimation, overhead and underground reticulation requirements, urban and rural networks, low-cost reticulation systems
  • Module 2 — Planning, design and upgrade of MV/LV reticulation: design and construction of network assets, planning procedure, planning and designing an electricity supply system, residential distribution planning and design, design tools and calculations, design concept of a 33/11 kV new substation, and upgrading existing MV & LV systems
  • Module 3 — Protection scheme philosophy and selection: short circuit performance of protection devices, selection of protection schemes for feeders, transformers, busbars and generators, plus course activities
Day 2

Earthing, overhead and underground reticulation, and buildings (Modules 4 – 7)

  • Module 4 — MV/LV reticulation earthing: objectives and fundamentals of earthing, methods of power system earthing, MV/LV earthing, earth loop impedance, transformer MV/LV earthing, surge arresters, materials for earthing applications, substation earth design, step and touch potential and GPR
  • Module 5 — Design and construction of overhead reticulation systems: physical loadings and design conditions, factors in line design, selection of insulators, conductors, cross arms, poles and stays, designing a line from scratch, conductor sizing, minimum selection requirements for line and cable applications, types of aluminium overhead conductors, special conductors and MV towers
  • Module 6 — Design and construction of underground reticulation systems: general specification for underground electrical reticulation, load considerations, cable selection, cable faults and protection, and cable installation methods
  • Module 7 — Power reticulation within buildings: distribution system configuration, vertical supply (rising mains) and horizontal supply at floor level, switchgear selection and location, arrangement of rising mains, constructional details of 11/0.4 kV distribution substations, emergency generators, UPS, calculations and course activities
