About this programme

SANS 10142-1:2026 Edition 3.3 represents a significant rewrite of the national wiring code, driven by the rapid adoption of solar PV, battery storage and other alternative energy systems in South African premises. Installations that were compliant a few years ago are now measured against a materially different standard.

This two-day masterclass works through the code clause by clause: cable and conductor selection, distribution boards and protection devices, overcurrent, earth leakage and surge protection, earthing and bonding, and motor and pump installations.

Particular attention is given to alternative supplies — PV, inverters and UPS systems — and to special locations such as medical, agricultural and hazardous installations, where the consequences of a wrong assumption are severe.

The programme closes with verification and certification: what an inspection must cover, how to test, and how to issue a Certificate of Compliance that will survive scrutiny.

Course content

The workshop programme, day by day.

Day 1

Code structure, cables, distribution boards, protection and earthing

  • Module 1 — Introduction: scope and exclusions of SANS 10142-1, what has changed or been added, general electrical installation safety principles
  • Module 2 — Selection and installation of cables and conductors: general circuit arrangement, current-carrying capacity, methods of installation, derating factors, voltage drop, cable selection calculations, wireways (conduit, ducting and trunking)
  • Module 3 — Distribution boards, busbars, circuit breakers, disconnecting devices and fuses: fault level calculation and DB selection, prospective short-circuit current in AC and DC circuits, busbars, disconnecting devices, mounting of switch-disconnectors, main switch-disconnectors and fuse installation
  • Module 4 — Protection requirements and protective equipment: overcurrent, overload and short-circuit protection, series-connected (cascaded) systems, earth leakage and surge protection, plus course activities
  • Module 5 — Earthing, bonding and lightning protection: objectives and fundamentals of earthing, materials, earth continuity conductors, minimum size and maximum length of ECC, and guidelines for surge protection in residential, commercial and industrial buildings
Day 2

Motors, appliances, alternative supplies, special locations and certification

  • Module 6 — Electric motors and pumps: motor control components, motor protection and control requirements, submersible motors, starters and water pump installation requirements
  • Module 7 — Water heaters, cooking appliances and HVAC: bonding and earth leakage requirements for water heaters, cooking appliance installation and circuits, HVAC circuit requirements, underfloor heating
  • Module 8 — Lighting and socket outlets: lighting circuits and luminaires, suspended luminaires, lamp holders, socket-outlets, mixed loading of circuits and positioning of socket-outlets
  • Module 9 — Alternative supplies: notices, indicators and colour coding, assessment of prospective short-circuit and earth-fault current, changeover devices, earthing requirements, and installation requirements for UPS and off-grid or grid-tied PV
  • Module 10 — Special installations or locations: bathrooms, showers and spas, submersible and non-submersible pumps, construction and demolition sites, agricultural and horticultural locations, medical locations, temporary installations and telecommunication DC power systems
  • Module 11 — Hazardous locations: classification of hazardous locations, selection and installation of equipment
  • Module 12 — Verification and certification: who the registered person is and how to become one, testing of electrical installations, CoC format, inspection and test report requirements, additional reports for secondary distribution, medical and hazardous locations, work on and alterations to existing installations, change of ownership, and a closing course exercise
